Jump into a new comfort zone! Nina Sinatra Class of 2012 Materials Science Engineering internship with Max Planck Institute MIT-Germany Program 2011 I worked for the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany. My project focused on studying and tuning the optical properties of polymer nanocapsules containing light-sensitive photochrome dye; this research has applications both in medicine and in fundamental polymer chemistry. MISTI was a wonderful way to take my MIT journey above and beyond! Living and working in Germany was a perfect opportunity to jump into a different comfort zone, work on great research, visit incredible places, and have a truly unique experience. As an engineering student, I couldnt ask for a more welcoming and cutting-edge place to work abroad. The research that I chose to work on represents a different area of materials science than I had previously been exposed to, but I embraced the challenge and had the opportunity to successfully complete my project. In addition to authoring a publication of my work, my experience in Germany has cemented my goal of continuing work in research and achieving a doctorate in my field. I hope to use MISTI 2.0 as an opportunity to return to my host institute and expand my project even more; I am excited both to continue my work and to keep in touch with the friends and contacts that I made abroad. Rhetorical questions are often used for confusion or to show the feelings of the writer, but Lord Byron not only use it for theses purposes but to show us his emotions. My opinion is that the tone u sed in the poem could be described as regretful because when she broke up with him he found out how it really felt and realized he had scarred many womens lives. The imagery used in the poem is physical imagery as Pale grew thy cheek and cold. Is death imagery and death is physical. There are some similarities though, between the three poems, the fact that in Villegiature and when we two parted is about a break up and a women to her lover is threatening to break up if she is treated wrongly (this could also be a difference). One of the major similarities is that all of the three writers talk in the first person expressing their emotions using such emotive language as pear tree bloom (from Villegiature) to slowly tell you whats inside the envelope. A woman to her starts directly into the speech do you come to bend me to your will, Villegiature comes from the beginning to say my window, when we two parted is getting to the point when we two parted in silence and tears, all of these poems start sharp and to the point using first person. A similarity between When we two parted and Villegiature could be that they both rhyme in between every two sentences. One of the rhymes used is lighted uninvited in Villegiature and tears years in when we two parted. I think the rh yming done in these two poems are to catch people attention when reading the two poems. These two poems also have the same amount of lines in each stanza. I think even though all of these poems are love poems they are quite different as they all talk about different types of love and have different stories but not just that also the layouts are completely different. For example: even if all of these three poems are love poetry they all have different meanings: a women to her lover is a poem about a woman demanding her rights even though shes way beyond her years whereas Villegiature is a poem where even the title has a meaning and also the fact that its a sonnet although when we two parted is a man in grief as a women he was having an affair with a woman who left her and the process is all in secrecy. One of the biggest differences was the authors who had different life stories like Lord Byron who was first of all a male but not just that as he was a player in his time who was played finally. Christina Walsh was a women well beyond her years as she talked to men like she was the boss, this took place in the 1900s where at the time women were treated as objects but she wouldnt stand for it. Edith Nesbit was the complete opposite as she was scared which I know as she used the false name Edith Nesbit to write such eloquent and deep meaning poems. I think the poem that is most different from the others is A woman to her lover as it is not a break up but a control freak who wants to do as she likes even though the whole country forbids it which shows that she is mentally strong. The other two poems are break ups and the tone is different to this. But even they have a singular difference e.g. when we two parted is written in an older time and written in older fashion than other two poems. Villegiature is a short sonnet that gets to the point towards the end instead of begging which makes it quite unique. Finally I think that these three poems are not quite as eye catching as I would of liked but quite boring as they are quite long but the only poem that was short got to the point right at the end and was an odd sonnet as most sonnets are about romance. If I had to choose one of these poems to work on or write about in the future I would choose Villegiature as it is the easiest to write about and it is relatively short compared to the other poems, Overall reviewing the love poems was a good experience for me as I have learnt a lot but still need to read a variety of interesting romantic poems to actually get involved.

This means that the international marketing activities take place in more than one country. The apparent, in more than one country, accounts for the complexity and diversity found in international marketing operations. The environment within which the marketer must implement marketing plans can change dramatically from country to country or region to region. The difficulties create by different environments are the international marketers primary concern. 3.1 UPPSALA MODEL Internationalization has different theoretical approaches but this report will focus on the Uppsala school approach. The Uppsala internationalization model was introduced by two Swedish professors, Johanson and Wiedersheim-Paul, from the University of Uppsala in 1975. This theory was derived from the study of Internationalization of four Swedish companies. It explains how companies gradually strengthen their activities in foreign markets and how their learning affects their investment behavior. (Johanson and Vahlne 1977, 1990). According to this theory internationalization evolves stepwise at a relatively slow pace because of the market regulations and organizational learnings. This model is based on the four core concepts which are Market knowledge, market commitment, commitment decisions and current activities. On the basis of these four concepts, the model predicts the basic pattern of firms internationalizing. The Uppsala model is supported by many studies which have shown both small and large enterprises passing through distinct and gradual stages during the development of their international affairs (Johanson and Vahlne, 1990; Oviatt and Phillips-McDougall, 1994). These different stages and their characters give companies different experiences and knowledge about an international market. (Johanson Wiedersheim-Paul, 1975). At every stage a company sustains previous knowledge and acquires new. According to Johanson et al (2002), it is the aggregated knowledge that is the base for further movement into a newer and more mature stage in the model. In the first stage organizations acquire experience from the domestic markets then they aspire to move for the foreign markets. In the specific country investments are then carried out sequentially, concurrently and cautiously. Firms start their functioning from geographically and culturally closer countries with the learning of the firms people operating in that market and move gradually to more distant countries. In the third stage companies start their foreign operations by the traditional exports. This model proposes that the sales begin with sporadic export orders, which are then followed by conventional export orders. This transformation helps the firms to focus and progressively move ahead on more concentrated and challenging operational modes such as sales subsidiaries. And then in the final stage, the firm acquires increasing levels of empirical knowledge only if they obligate to the higher levels of resources in the market. Explain what the poem is about and how the poet conveys the emotions he feels. The poem is about Achebe’s encounter with a mother and child in a refugee camp. This mother was different from the other mothers as she still cherished and loved her son. The other mothers had already stopped caring for their children as survival was not the most important thing and there wasn’t any hope of survival for their children anyway. In line 9: â€Å"Most mothers there had long ceased to care† The poet’s tone was varied, in the first stanza he used long, soft vowels such as the vowel ‘o’ and words such as ‘tenderness’. In line 4, Achebe chose to used the word ‘odour’ instead of the word ‘smell’ or ‘stench’ because it sounded softer and more rounded. The softness continued until the beginning of line 5 where Achebe used hard-sounding words such as ‘diarrhoea’ and ‘blown’. The fact that the child will die is hinted repeatedly. From line 7 to line 14 of the second stanza, he seemed to be admiring the mother’s love for her child in even those circumstances. At the end, his tone was sad and regretful. In the last three lines: â€Å"†¦ like putting flowers on a tiny grave. † There was alliteration in line 5 of the second stanza: â€Å"behind blown empty bellies† The poet used the work â€Å"ghost† as a metaphor in lines 8 and 9 of the second stanza. In â€Å"ghost smile†, he meant the softening of the mother’s expression as she looked at her son. There was repetition of â€Å"ghost† and in â€Å"ghost of a mother’s pride†, it represented what the mother used to feel and here there was only the tiniest left of it. The last 2 lines were a smilie, he’s saying that her combing her son’s hair is like a final goodbye because she would probably never get to do it again. In the first line, â€Å"Madonna and Child†, this is the scene when Christ was taken from the cross and placed on Mary’s knees. Achebe is saying that even this scene could not have been more touching than of the refugee mother and her child. In line 3: â€Å"for a son she soon would have to forget. † Here he means that after the boy dies, the mother will have to concentrate on survival for herself, forcing her to forget her son. This will not be able to mourn her child. In line 4: â€Å"The air was heavy with odours†¦ † The air was thick with the stench. The air was so dense that it seemed it had a weight and was more than just gas. In lines 7 and 8: â€Å"Struggling in laboured steps†¦ † Even walking is difficult for them. Walking is hard work. Achebe doesn’t know the mother’s name, so he refers to her as â€Å"she† and â€Å"her†. â€Å"Rust-coloured† is the colour of a dark-haired person’s hair when he or she has an inadequate diet. The hair signals that the child is incredibly unhealthy and on the verge of dying. In line 11: â€Å"†¦ hair left on his skull†¦ † The child is in such poor health that his hair has fallen out. Achebe used the work â€Å"skull† because it showed how poorly the boy was and because it represented death. In line 12: â€Å"- Singing in her eyes – † The hyphens surrounding this phrase outlined its significance. This was probably because the mother remembers singing to him, when they were happy. From line 15: â€Å"act of no consequence†¦ † Combing her son’s hair would usually be something a mother wouldn’t think twice about. They were probably quite well off before they were in this situation. The punctuation Achebe used were little. At the end of the first verse he put a period. This is because he was finalizing a statement. At the end of line 5 of the second stanza, there’s another period. This is because he’d finished describing about the surroundings and was moving onto the mother. In line 7, there was a semi-colon, which indicates a pause. There is another one in line 16. In line 13 there are three periods together. This is usually used to signify that something will eventually continue. At the end of the poem he put another period. This is because he is ending the poem and also because he is once again finalizing something. Since the child is dying, death is final, so the period was suitable. In lines 13 to 16, Achebe introduced the possibility that the mother and child were probably quite well off before they were in this situation. However, their lives had changed and it was no longer that comfortable lifestyle. I thought the poem was sad. It showed how disasters could change the feelings and lives of normal people like you and me. It was an eye-opening poem, and it made me realise that if I weren’t living this lifestyle that boy may well have been anyone I know or me.

Malcolm X greatly affected the turn of black de-segregation in the 1950s. He had strong beliefs, suffered a gruesome assassination, and a remarkable legacy. Malcolm Little had many strong beliefs in himself and in people all over the world. Malcolm Little educated himself, so was able to find out what he believed. For one, he changed his name from Malcolm Little to Malcolm X because X was the original surname of the slaves from whom he had descended. He insisted that Blacks had the right to protect themselves. He had always believed that violence was occasionally reasonable. Even though he was put into prison in 1946 for burglary, and got out in 1952, he was still a very significantly important person. Malcolm X became very interested in the Nation of Islam. The Nation of Islam is based on conventional teachings, Black Nationalism, and self-help programs that helped the Blacks living in the ghettoes. He believed in and studied Elijah Muhammad, who was the leader of the Black Muslims and popularized their doctrines. He soon became a Black Muslim and as one, he encouraged other Blacks to form all-Black communities. After being a Black Muslim for awhile, he became the â€Å"Top Dog† and representative for them. On March 8, 1964, Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam and made a religious journey to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In Mecca, he took the name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. When Malcolm broke with the Nation of Islam, he became a target for death threats and pressure. On February 21st, Malcolm X was shot and his life was taken away from him in Harlem. No one thinks it is a coincidence the February 21st, was the first day of National Brotherhood Week. He was shot by a double-barreled shot gun and two pistols. Malcolm’s lawyer, Percy Sutton, said after he was proclaimed dead, â€Å"Malcolm knew he would be killed. He told me repeatedly-and as late as yesterday- that his life was in danger† (Finkelman). There were three men involved in the assassination of Malcolm. They were all members of the Nation of Islam. The main one who shot him in the chest was Talmadge Hayer. Hayer was born in 1943, making him twenty-two at the time of Malcolm’s death. Earlier in his life he was detained in prison for possession of guns and disorderly conduct. He testified that his accomplices were not guilty, but they were all convicted. The Audubon Ballroom was the place where Malcolm was shot. The Audubon Ballroom adjoined a theatre found in Washington Heights, NYC. Washington Heights is in a neighborhood north of Harlem. Recently, it was obliterated to make way for the new Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, the place were Malcolm X was taken when he was shot. Everyone that walks in the doors of the Hospital will see the memorial which was placed there for Malcolm X. Malcolm X was one of the most contentious persons of the century. He had met many people, traveled many places, and influenced many lives. Many young Black activists supported him. Malcolm X was captivating and witty, while his words gave hope to all who heard them. He was an incredible speaker and many people wished to quote him. Malcolm X once said, â€Å"How can anyone be against love?†(â€Å"Malcolm X†). I agree with him, no one can be against love.
